Trama
L'11 aprile del 1970 parte la tredicesima missione statunitense di esplorazione sulla luna. Capitano della missione, considerata talmente di routine che le televisioni l'hanno snobbata, e' Jim Lovell, coadiuvato da Fred Haise e Jack Swigert, che ha sostituito all'ultimo momento il tenente Ken Mattingly, rimasto a terra per ragioni mediche. Dopo tre giorni nello spazio, qualcosa va storto: la potenza dei motori e il sistema di guida automatica sono danneggiati, l'ossigeno diminiusce rapidamente; e' una lotta contro il tempo per cercare di riportare a casa gli austronauti: per tre giorni il mondo vive col fiato sospeso.
